Brief restaurant info
Award winning Beijing Duck chain with three locations providing a great all-around experience
Beijing, Roast Duck, Seafood
Da Dong is many a Beijinger's go-to choice for delicious Beijing duck (kao ya). They wisely listened to the market: people that don't like Beijing duck, normally complain that it is too fatty or oily, so Da Dong created a special variety of super lean Beijing duck (198RMB+8RMB/person+10%) that has garnered rave reviews. Waitstaff really concentrate on holistic duck experience, taking the time to show patrons several ways to consume the delicacy.
The restaurant is trying to branch out a bit from Beijing duck, and focus more on higher-margin items like sea cucumber (268RMB/100g), abalone, and shark's fin. There are therefore a couple menus available, one is a massive, full-page photo album of their more expensive seafood offerings, the other has their more traditional Beijing dishes. Ordering from the seafood menu can see you spending well over 500RMB/person while eating Beijing cuisine runs about 100-150RMB/person plus their 10% service charge.
The three locations differ slightly in ambiance. The original location at Tuanjiehu has a traditional-style facade, but the interior is a bit cramped and showing signs of the years. Their newer locations at Nanxincang Tower and Jinbao Place are decidedly modern, with an impressive open show kitchen, good for watching the duck being prepared. (Jun '09)

Brief Restaurant Info
Famous hole-in-the-wall Peking Duck restaurant; reserve your table in advance
Roast Duck
Liqun has survived while many of the hutongs around it have been destroyed.
While the restaurant can be a little hard to find, there are many hand-painted signs in English pointing the way once you get to the south end of Zhengyi Road. Expect to have several tricycle drivers trying to hawk a very short, very expensive ride to the restaurant. The walk is only a couple hundred meters; don't let them convince you otherwise.
The specialty here is the duck. The place is quite famous and prices have gone up correspondingly with its rise in fame. Liqun is still very reasonably compared to Western prices. A true hole-in-the-wall, there are only a few tables in the whole establishment. Best to call well ahead and tell them how many ducks you want.

Brief restaurant info
Massive, opulent restaurant and lounge; event hosting
Fusion, Roast Duck
China Lounge offers what they refer to as traditional Chinese "provincial" cuisine; that is, the best dishes of each province from all across China's varied geographical and culinary map. Their trademark dish is Beijing Duck, and given the location and setting, 126RMB is a very reasonable price for a duck (Peking Duck takes one hour to cook, so call ahead if you don't want to wait). All told, expect to pay on average 150RMB/person, unless you stray into the Chinese delicacies of sea cucumber, abalone (486RMB+), or the reprehensible shark's fin soup (399RMB). Drink prices are reasonable, with wine at 50RMB/glass or 280RMB/bottle. Mixed drinks and beer start at 30RMB, and cocktails go from 35RMB.
The restaurant is located on a nice piece of property overlooking the lake behind Workers' Stadium and with a nice, large yard in front. Lovely outdoor dining options are available on their huge rooftop terrace or on the front patio. Over the Olympics, it was China Lounge that fed the American Olympic Team and even hosted President Bush in one of their five palatial private rooms. The private rooms, many that look out over the lake behind Workers' Stadium, require a minimum spend of 2,000RMB.

Brief restaurant info
Beijing, Roast Duck
Quanjude is a lao zi hao, a venerable, long-lasting brand, that traces its roots all the way back to 1864. Since then it has built a veritable empire of restaurants, including close to a dozen locations of the Quanjude brand throughout the city. The location on the north end of Lotus Lane is a good place to bring visitors with a walk along the lake on the way there, although Qianhai has become regrettably over-commercialized in the last several years.
Look for Quanjude’s trademark painted fiberglass duck and you’ll know you’ve found the right place. Attendants will usher you down an elevator to lower level one, a large main dining area surrounded by many private rooms and smaller non-smoking sections. There is live entertainment in the evenings during dinner that finishes up about eight o’clock.
The dish for which Quanjude owes its fame, Beijing duck, starts the menu at 168RMB for a full duck or 88RMB for a half duck. Condiments are 5RMB/person and pancakes to roll your duck are another 5RMB per ten pieces. There’s no need to pre-order or wait one hour for your duck, most are brought out and cut table-side within only ten minutes of ordering. Considering the menu-wide 10% service charge, it would have been nice if the servers gave a demonstration on how to properly eat Beijing duck, as my guests had no idea that the duck was even supposed to be wrapped in the pancakes. Personally, I really didn’t take much to the rest of the lengthy menu, and it took quite a while to find enough dishes I thought looked palatable. It just seemed they were trying to hard to be fancy and therefore avoided classic Beijing dishes that I wanted to share with my visitors. When I asked for a couple simple Beijing dishes by name, the server actually laughed at me and said somewhat disdainfully that they don’t serve that type of food at Quanjude. There didn’t seem to be any guiding principle influencing the items on the menu. There are several other duck items, plenty of sea cucumber and abalone dishes, and lots of deep-fried dishes soaked in sweet and sour sauce.
Not seeing a single appetizing cold dish to start, we instead started with some garlic-fried youmaicai (22RMB) while the chef deftly worked away at slicing up our duck. The rest of the food was well done, if pricy, with the braised mushrooms and bamboo shoots (48RMB) and, to a lesser extent, the lamb and herb dumplings (28RMB) standing out from the pack.
My rather harsh assessment aside, Quanjude is still a place visitors will have a good time and be taken care of. The menu has plenty of pictures and passable English translations, so ordering should not be a problem. The next time I'm hosting visitors, however, I doubt if Quanjude will be at the top of my list of places to go. (Dec ’08)
