Gorgeous orchard farmhouse restaurant and country store; famous for their Sunday brunch

Sunday brunch at The Orchard is one of the best dining experience I've ever had in Beijing.
The 160RMB/person buffet includes delicious fresh baked bread, eight different salads, a soup, a host of mains (e.g. ginger & pesto lamb cutlets, a whole baked salmon, braised pulled pork), several delightful desserts, and coffee. There's a special buffet for kids. Children also have their own playroom with toys and a DVD player, but most seem to enjoy exploring the garden, orchard and restaurant best.
The setting is idyllic, the service attentive. I honestly can't think of a single fault. The large restaurant is usually completely booked for Sunday's brunch, so book well in advance. The Orchard is open every day except Monday for a la carte dining. (April '08)

Schoolhouse
An excellent choice to pair with a trip to the Great Wall or for a dinner out of Beijing

Located near the Great Wall at Mutianyu on the site of an abandoned elementary school. The Schoolhouse uses existing buildings, local staff, locally-sourced food, and glass handicrafts made on site to pursue their philosophy of sustainable tourism. Picnic lunches are available to take on your hike of the Great Wall. For dinner, try to reserve one of the small tables on their terrace, or plan to attend one of their monthly "Country Gourmet Series" dinners with live jazz music and a multi-course dinner prepared by the Executive Chef.
Directions
Get complete directions from their website. Head northwest out of Huairou, through Bohaicun. You'll pass many restaurants, then a convention center on your right and a green house restaurant on your left. Go past the aqueduct ahead and then veer right at the traffic circle (Mutianyu Roundabout). Head right at the next fork and the restaurant is just around the bend, clearly marked, including a large sign that says "EAT".

Award winning Beijing Duck chain with three locations providing a great all-around experience

Da Dong is many a Beijinger's go-to choice for delicious Beijing duck (kao ya). They wisely listened to the market: people that don't like Beijing duck, normally complain that it is too fatty or oily, so Da Dong created a special variety of super lean Beijing duck (198RMB+8RMB/person+10%) that has garnered rave reviews. Waitstaff really concentrate on holistic duck experience, taking the time to show patrons several ways to consume the delicacy.
The restaurant is trying to branch out a bit from Beijing duck, and focus more on higher-margin items like sea cucumber (268RMB/100g), abalone, and shark's fin. There are therefore a couple menus available, one is a massive, full-page photo album of their more expensive seafood offerings, the other has their more traditional Beijing dishes. Ordering from the seafood menu can see you spending well over 500RMB/person while eating Beijing cuisine runs about 100-150RMB/person plus their 10% service charge.
The three locations differ slightly in ambiance. The original location at Tuanjiehu has a traditional-style facade, but the interior is a bit cramped and showing signs of the years. Their newer locations at Nanxincang Tower and Jinbao Place are decidedly modern, with an impressive open show kitchen, good for watching the duck being prepared. (Jun '09)
